What owners report

Drawn from 25 owners' accounts of the Grand Design Imagine, mostly 2018–2025 units. It covers the whole Grand Design Imagine line, not only this floorplan. Nobody here has camped in it; this is what people who bought one say.

The good news comes largely from full-timers: a 2022 2500RL that crossed the country and back with one water leak at a cracked stove vent, a 2024 unit lived in for a year and towed about 10,000 miles without a warranty visit, and 2018 and 2019 units still in daily use after three or more years. When something does fail, several owners say Grand Design answers the phone and ships parts without paperwork.

The bad news is long repair lists on other units. One owner of a 2019 lists a propane regulator, water pump, fridge, furnace ducts, toilet, water heater, air conditioner, leveling jacks and frame rust, most of them failing mid-trip. A new 22MLE arrived with its battery wired backward to the solar charger and drawers held together with staples. Faux-leather recliners and laminate counters peel within a year or two of full-time use.

Towing is where owners of the larger floorplans warn others. A 30-foot Imagine puts around 900 lb on the tongue by one owner's account, and owners who started with half-ton trucks on 25 to 32-foot units describe sway in wind and moved up to 3/4-ton trucks.

What owners like

  • +Full-time owners of 2018 to 2024 units report years of use with few repairs, including cross-country loops and a year of travel with no warranty work.
  • +Grand Design's warranty support gets credit for answering calls and overnighting or shipping parts with no paperwork.
  • +The rear bathrooms in the 2500RL and 2600RB are roomy enough for owners up to about 6'4".

Common complaints

  • −Some units rack up long repair lists, from water pumps, fans and tank valves to fridges, water heaters, drain lines and frame rust, often failing on the road.
  • −New units have shipped with faults the dealer missed, including a 22MLE whose battery was wired backward to the solar charger, factory tires already bulging at zero miles and a water heater that quit within the first year.
  • −The faux-leather furniture and laminate counters peel with full-time use, sometimes within the first year.
  • −On the 2970RL, the fresh-tank drain hangs below the frame, and two owners cracked their tanks dragging it over a bump.
  • −Owners towing the larger floorplans with half-ton or midsize trucks describe sway in wind, a jarring ride and single-digit mpg, and several moved to 3/4-ton trucks.
  • −Slide-outs pop, squeak or stop short on some units and need lubricating or a controller reset.

Questions owners ask

Can a half-ton truck tow an Imagine?+

The small ones, yes: owners tow the 16ML and 2400BH with Silverado and Sierra 1500s, and the 2400BH owner reports no towing trouble in rain, wind or hills. The 30-foot and longer floorplans are a different story, and owners who started with a Ram 1500 or similar moved to 3/4-ton trucks after towing in wind.
