What owners report

Drawn from 18 owners' accounts of the Northwood Arctic Fox Camper, mostly 2017–2027 units. It covers the whole Northwood Arctic Fox Camper line, not only this floorplan. Nobody here has camped in it; this is what people who bought one say.

Weigh it before choosing a truck. The 865 sticker says 2,900 lb dry; one owner's came in over 4,000 lb from the factory and about 4,500 lb lightly provisioned, because the brochure figure leaves out the mandatory Fox Value Package and options. A 996 owner scaled 5,800 lb camp-ready, a 992 runs 5,300 lb loaded, and a 990 owner who winter-camps in the Rockies bought an F-450 to carry roughly 4,900 lb. Several owners who tried a slide-out model on a single-rear-wheel one-ton gave up on it or moved to a dually, F-450 or larger.

What the weight buys is cold-weather capability and room. Owners report living in an 865 for two years down to -22°F, a 2021 990 heating from 21°F to 70°F in about an hour and a half, and years of winter camping in the Canadian Rockies in an older 990. The slide and the large tanks are why one couple picked a 990 over the Adventurer they also owned. A 2022 1150 has held up after life outdoors through Michigan winters with routine roof and caulk checks.

The weak points owners mention are fittings rather than the shell: tie-downs that loosen or shear, thin factory mattresses, and 12-volt and charging faults on 2018–2020 990s.

What owners like

  • +Heating holds up in hard cold: one owner lived two years in an 865 down to -22°F, a 2021 990 warmed from 21°F to 70°F in 1 to 1.5 hours when an owner's son tested it, and an 811 furnace cycled about three times an hour at 19°F.
  • +The slide and wide floorplans give noticeably more floor space than rival campers, and owners of a 2021 996 and an 811 report no slide problems with basic cleaning and lubrication.
  • +Large fresh and waste tanks are a deciding reason for owners who winter-camp where dump stations close, and for long boondocking trips in an 865.

Common complaints

  • −Real weights run well over the brochure dry figure once mandatory packages, water and gear go in, by owners' scale readings on the 865, 996, 992 and 1140, with one 865 about 1,600 lb heavier than its sticker.
  • −On a single-rear-wheel one-ton, owners of the 811 and 865 describe handling like a boat or feeling unsafe even with sway bars, airbags and overload springs.
  • −Even dually and F-450 owners end up at or past payload with the bigger models, and one replaced a 3500 dually that was 1,500 lb over gross with a 996 aboard.
  • −Tie-downs take a beating: one owner found shearing on a brand-new 1150's rear tie-down after the drive home from the dealer, and another found tie-downs loosening on an 811 over washboard roads.
  • −12-volt faults appear on 2018–2020 990s, including house power that dies off shore power and a chassis connection that stopped charging the house batteries.

Questions owners ask

Can a single-rear-wheel F-350 carry an Arctic Fox 811?+

It is borderline by owners' accounts. A 2024 F-350 Tremor owner added sway bars and overload springs and still found the loaded 811 uncomfortable on the Oregon coast, and another owner could not make an 811 work on a single-wheel F-350 with airbags after it rode fine on a dually. One owner runs an 811 on an older F-250 after airbags, 19.5-inch tires and new shocks and is happy with it.
