What owners report

Drawn from 24 owners' accounts of the Keystone Cougar, mostly 2018–2025 units. It covers the whole Keystone Cougar line, not only this floorplan. Nobody here has camped in it; this is what people who bought one say.

One owner of a new 2024 bought a cotter pin, a battery box, a hose fitting and exterior trim vinyl and paid a locksmith to re-key a pass-through door before the trailer was right, then Keystone asked for their Social Security number before it would reimburse $20 of it. Other 2023 to 2025 units bought new, four of them from Camping World, arrived with lists of their own, and a few owners say outright that the trailer is not the premium product it was sold as.

Other owners are content. Full-timers in 2018 to 2024 travel trailers and fifth wheels report seasons with nothing beyond normal maintenance, and fifth-wheel owners like the auto-leveling and the larger, better-ducted air. The recurring practical issue is weight: Half-Ton models loaded for a family can run a half-ton truck out of payload before they reach its tow rating. One owner who weighed their 2021 bunkhouse found about 1,250 lb on the hitch, which left 368 lb of truck payload for the family and gear.

What owners like

  • +Several owners of 2018 to 2024 units, including full-timers, report a season or several years with nothing beyond normal maintenance.
  • +Fifth-wheel owners value the auto-leveling, the In-Command control panel and the larger ducted air conditioning over cheaper trailers they owned before.
  • +Warranty work on items like the fridge and TV antenna got done for some owners without a fight.

Common complaints

  • −New 2023 to 2025 units arrive with long fix-it lists: leaking city-water inlets and drain caps, loose shades and trim, missing parts and roof sealant flagged by a pre-delivery inspection.
  • −The tankless water heater gets complaints, from about one minute of hot water at a time to a unit that alternates between scalding and cold.
  • −Water gets in on some units: a 2021 owner found the carpet under a slide soaked after one storm, a 2022 owner found delamination under the rear window, and a 2019 owner needed a whole new bathroom floor.
  • −Hardware wears out under heavy use, including a bed slide that needs manual override, a fresh-tank fill tube that came loose, slide cables fraying in the first year and door hinge screws pulling out of the door.
  • −Half-Ton models loaded for a family can exceed a half-ton truck's payload, and owners have ended up adding airbags or buying a 3/4-ton truck.
