The difference that matters

Two small molded fiberglass fifth wheels with a bed over the truck. The Scamp 19 Deluxe is the lighter and cheaper of the pair: 3,100 lb dry with a 500 lb pin, a 4,000 lb GVWR and room for up to six, at around $41,000. The Escape 5.0 weighs 3,910 lb with a 646 lb pin and is rated at 5,500 lb, sleeps four, and runs around $44,000.

The Escape's extra size shows up in its tanks: 28 gallons fresh, 28 gray and 30 black, against the Scamp's 12, 21 and 6. That is the difference between a weekend and a week away from a dump station. Its interior height runs from 6 feet 4 inches to 7 feet, and a U-shaped dinette is optional over the standard bench.

The Scamp includes a furnace, a gas water heater, an oven, a microwave, a shower and toilet and a 76 by 60 inch loft bed, with air conditioning, a generator and a portable solar kit as options.
