The difference that matters

A 985 lb weight difference puts these two on different trucks. The Palomino Backpack HS-8801 weighs 2,575 lb dry on a 9-foot floor and fits three-quarter-ton trucks with 6.5- to 8-foot beds. The Northern Lite 10-2EX LE Dry Bath weighs 3,560 lb on a 131-inch long-bed floor.

The Palomino keeps things compact: a welded aluminum frame, electric jacks, a 100Ah lithium battery with 200 W of solar, an 11 cu ft 12 V refrigerator, an on-demand water heater with an outside shower and a wet bath. Its tanks are small, 21 gallons fresh, 5 gray and 6.5 black.

The Northern Lite brings a roomy dry bath with a seat, a two-piece molded fiberglass shell, 600 W of solar, air conditioning, Truma Combi heat, a Heki skylight, power awnings and an oven, with 40 gallons of fresh and gray water and 20 black. Each sleeps four.
