The difference that matters

Two 16-foot short-bed truck campers with the same sleeping count and a large weight gap. The Lance 825 is 1,795 lb dry, built with aluminum-framed walls, floor and roof and block-foam insulation, and sized for a short-bed three-quarter-ton or larger. The Northern Lite 8-11EX LE Wet Bath weighs 3,100 lb dry in its two-piece molded fiberglass hull, a 1,305 lb difference that matters a great deal on a truck's payload.

The Northern Lite uses that weight on equipment: three 200 W solar panels, an air conditioner, a Heki thermal skylight, power side and rear awnings, a 3-burner stove with oven and a microwave. Its gray tank is larger at 24 gallons against 13. The Lance has a cabover queen, a convertible dinette, a wet bath, Truma Combi heat and electric Acme-screw jacks, with 30 gallons fresh against 33.

For a lighter load on the truck, the Lance. For solar, air conditioning and a fiberglass shell, the Northern Lite.
