Coachmen Apex Nano 213RDS

Sleeping four with a rear dinette and one slide, the Apex Nano 213RDS uses a 7'6"-wide lightweight body with a heated, enclosed underbelly and prep for an inverter and Starlink. Coachmen's line list mentions a 400-watt solar system, but whether it comes standard on this plan is unclear.

What owners report

Drawn from 26 owners' accounts of the Coachmen Apex Nano, mostly 2018–2026 units. It covers the whole Coachmen Apex Nano line, not only this floorplan. Nobody here has camped in it; this is what people who bought one say.

The lightness is the reason owners chose it, and the reason they keep it: owners tow 185BH and 194BHS units with an Explorer, a Grand Highlander, a Pathfinder or a BMW X5, and 208BHS owners with a Colorado or Canyon. One family has taken a 2016 185BH on two-week, 2,800-mile trips for nine seasons with two boys now in their teens, using it mostly for sleeping. The caveat owners add is tongue weight: one 228BHS owner measured close to 800 lb loaded against a listed 550.

The 208BHS gets the warmest reviews, for full-size bunks, two axles and a pantry at a weight midsize trucks can manage. Complaints are about factory finish rather than structure: wire crimps that fell off a furnace connection, a wiring and hose tangle under the fridge on a new 190RBS, windows set in oversized openings that leaked. Two owners took leaks or slide faults back under warranty and were told the dealer could not replicate them.

What owners like

  • +Owners tow the small models with midsize SUVs and trucks, an Explorer, Grand Highlander, Pathfinder, BMW X5, Colorado and Canyon among them, on trips from Indiana to Florida and Boston to Acadia without trouble.
  • +Owners of the 208BHS are especially fond of theirs, praising wide full-size bunks, two axles and a pantry closet at its weight; one family is entering a fifth season in theirs.
  • +Recent 185BH and 213RDS owners report few problems after a season or two, beyond small fixes.

Common complaints

  • −Factory wiring is sloppy: owners found loose crimps throughout a 2021 unit, one sparking near a propane appliance, and an unsecured tangle of wires and hoses behind the fridge on a new 190RBS.
  • −Windows leaked on a 2018 and a 2021 unit, in one case rotting the OSB storage floor, traced to a poorly seated seal or an oversized rough opening.
  • −Tongue weight and payload, not trailer weight, are what owners run up against: a 228BHS measured close to 800 lb on the tongue loaded against a listed 550, and 208BHS owners plan tow vehicles around its 600 lb tongue or run close to a Colorado's payload.
  • −With a lighter tow vehicle, owners describe a 194BHS behind a Honda Pilot and a single-axle unit behind a Tacoma as bouncy or sketchy at freeway speed and in wind.
  • −Dealers told owners they could not replicate a plumbing leak and an intermittent slide fault brought in under warranty.
  • −The small factory solar panel does not keep the battery charged on its own: one owner says it barely holds up while boondocking, another that it only tops up and they have come back to a dead battery after cloudy storage.
  • −Interior storage is minimal on the smaller models and the bunks are narrow; one 185BH family turned the upper bunk into storage for totes.

Questions owners ask

Can a midsize pickup tow the 208BHS?+

Owners tow one with a 2019 Colorado and a GMC Canyon. The Colorado owner says payload is very close to the limit and checked it on a truck scale before trips, and added tow mirrors.
